Elon Musk: Who Is He?

Elon Musk is one of the most innovative entrepreneurs of our time.

His meteoric rise has prompted comparisons to Steve Jobs, Howard Hughes, Henry Ford, and Bill Gates, among other visionary corporate leaders. Musk developed a strong work ethic (he is reported to work up to 120 hours per week) and a tenacious, single-minded vision after an often traumatic childhood.

He is expected to have a total net worth of $151 billion as of 2021. Only Jeff Bezos has surpassed him as the world's richest person.

Let's take a peek at the life of the man behind a slew of firms that have wreaked havoc across many industries.

Early Childhood Development and Education

Elon Reeve Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa's third largest city, in 1971.

His mother was a model and a dietician, while his father was an engineer. He is the oldest of three children, all of whom are academically successful: Kimbal Musk, his brother, is a venture capitalist and an environmentalist.

Tosca Musk, his sister, is a successful producer and director.

Musk moved in with his father after his parents divorced in 1980.

He would subsequently describe the individual as "a dreadful human being... he has done practically every evil thing you can conceive of." My upbringing was abysmal. Growing up, I faced a lot of challenges. One thing I'm concerned about with my children is that they aren't exposed to enough challenge," Musk would later say.

Bullied as a Child

Musk, according to his own account, was a self-described reader and a smart aleck who devoured everything from encyclopaedias to comic comics. Musk's academic prowess, on the other hand, did him no favours as a child. In the tough-minded Afrikaner culture he experienced in school, he made few friends.

Musk went to the prestigious, English-speaking Waterkloof House Preparatory School and eventually graduated from Pretoria Boys High School, where he started a year early.

According to his descriptions, the years were lonely and terrible.

They enlisted the help of my best friend to entice me out of hiding so they could thrash me. "And that was painful," Musk remarked. "They decided I was it for whatever reason, and they were going to pursue me endlessly." Growing up was difficult because of this. There was no respite for a lot of years. You're hounded around by gangs at school who try to beat the (expletive) out of you, and then you get home, and it's just as bad.

Early Achievements

If there was one bright spot in Musk's life, it was technology. He learned to programme on the Commodore VIC-20, an inexpensive home computer, when he was just a kid. He quickly advanced to the point where he could construct Blastar, a Space Invaders-style video game. For $500, he sold the game's BASIC code to a magazine called PC and Office Technology.

Musk and his brother wanted to open a video game arcade near their school in one telling occurrence at the time. The scheme was eventually cancelled by their parents. However, it appears that the only thing stopping them was the requirement for a city permission, which required an adult to apply for.

Musk's College Years

Musk came to Canada at the age of 17 to avoid participating in the South African military, which was primarily responsible for upholding apartheid in the late 1980s. Through his mother, he eventually became a Canadian citizen. Musk enrolled in Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, after emigrating to Canada. Justine Wilson, an aspiring writer, was there when he met her. Before divorcing in 2008, they married and had five sons together, including twins and triplets.

Getting into the United States

Musk transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after two years at Queen's University. He tackled two majors, but it wasn't all work and no play for him. He acquired a -bedroom fraternity home with a friend, which they utilised as an impromptu nightclub.

Musk graduated from the Wharton School with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. The two majors foreshadow Musk's future professional path, but it was physics that left the more lasting influence.

Later, he would comment, "(Physics is) an excellent framework for reasoning." "Bring things down to their most basic facts and work your way up from there."

Notable Achievements

Musk travelled to California at the age of 24 to obtain a Ph.D. in applied physics at Stanford University. Musk, though, had entrepreneurial fantasies dancing in his head as the Internet exploded and Silicon Valley boomed. He only lasted two days in the Ph.D. programme.

X.com

Musk founded Zip2, a web software startup that would assist newspapers produce online city guides, in 1995 with $28,000 and his younger brother Kimbal by his side. Zip2 was purchased by Compaq's AltaVista web search engine for $340 million in 1999. Musk utilised the money he received from the Zip2 buyout to launch X.com, which he hoped would become the future of finance X.com was combined with Confinity, a money transfer company, and the resulting company was dubbed PayPal. Musk was then fired from the firm, which was later purchased by eBay for $1.5 billion, but he walked away with $180 million in stock.

Tesla

First, he provided funding—roughly $70 million. Musk then joined engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning to assist run Tesla Motors in 2004, where he was instrumental in the design of the Tesla Roadster, an electric car. Although Musk took over as CEO and product architect after Eberhard was fired from the company in 2007 due to a series of conflicts. Tesla has grown to be one of the most popular and desirable vehicle brands in the world under his leadership. Tesla, in addition to creating electric automobiles, has a strong presence in the solar energy sector, courtesy to its purchase of SolarCity. This clean-energy services company, which was founded in 2006, now develops two rechargeable solar batteries that are primarily used for stationary energy storage. The Powerwall is designed for residential backup power and off-grid use, whereas the Powerpack is designed for business or electric utility grid use.

SpaceX

Musk used a large portion of the funds from his PayPal sale to establish Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX, an interstellar travel enterprise. Musk claims that he invested $100 million in SpaceX in 2002. Musk's SpaceX has won many high-profile contracts from NASA and the US Air Force to construct rockets and carry out military missions. Musk has been outspoken about his aspirations to deploy an astronaut to Mars by 2025 as part of a joint NASA-Musk project.

Personal Irrationality

Musk looked to be smoking marijuana while being interviewed for a podcast on Sept. 7, 2018. That revelation, along with the departure of two Tesla executives—its head of human resources and chief accounting officer—caused the stock to fall in value. This was only the latest in a spate of bad news for the firm that year, which included a shareholder lawsuit against Musk and Tesla over his controversial Aug. 7, 2018, tweet. Musk has hinted on Twitter that he was mulling a move.Tesla is a private company. Later on, the corporation decided against the move.

The Bottom Line

Musk’s early interests in philosophy, science fiction, and fantasy novels are reflected in his sense of idealism and concern with human progress—and in his business career. He works in the areas that he has identified as crucial to our future, specifically the Internet, the transition to renewable energy sources, and space colonization. He has defied critics, disrupted industries, and made advances in all three of these frontiers, via his creation of PayPal, Tesla Motors, SolarCity, and SpaceX—game-changers all, despite their sometimes rocky performance.
